Griffiths Cunningham family fonds

This fonds contains extensive correspondence written by Laurence Cunningham to his mother while he served overseas during World War I.  His letters provide insight into the conditions the soldiers had to endure.  He writes about quarantines for chicken pox, measles, mumps and grippe; air raids; digging communication trenches and erecting barbed wire entanglements; conditions in the trenches; helping an injured German; and his hospitalization for an injury.

Letter written by Laurence Cunningham during World War I, June 7, 1917

This letter was written "somewhere in France".  Laurence writes "I slept in a dug out dry and nice, we have no idea when we will go to meet Fritz but that don't matter we will never be content or settled again until we have been in our first fight from which we know some will never come back.  Human nature is hard to understand".
