Andrew Jackson Fonds, 1950-2007
Andrew Jackson was an economist with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) from 1989 to 2012. The material in this fonds primarily consists of items acquired and created by Jackson during his tenure with the CLC. Issues covered include women’s rights, Indigenous rights, healthcare, social and economic policy, the Canadian Constitution (especially the Meech Lake Accord), as well as some material about the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
His roles with the CLC included Chief Economist and later Director of Social and Economic Policy. Some of the major issues he addressed included the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax, the FTA and NAFTA, regressive tax reform, cuts to Unemployment Insurance and federal transfers to the provinces, public pensions and pension regulation, and labour market policy, including training. During his work with the CLC, Jackson was a policy advisor to the NDP caucus. He was also very active with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), writing many studies documenting adverse economic and social trends such as wealth inequality.
