Gardening in All Seasons
Gardening is not just a "growing season" endeavour. Winter can be a very busy time for cutting, grafting, collecting seeds, pruning, and surgery as well as greenhouse work. There was quite a bit of time spent thinning out the old elms in the Niagara Glen.
In the fall of 1939, surplus hay was dumped into the rock pond in order to decompose over the winter. In the spring, the hay was to be removed. Tom, the tractor driver, backed up onto the ice. The tractor began to disappear under the water. Quick thinking prevented the tractor from being destroyed. The tractor was attached by chain to a truck and dragged from the water before any real damage was done.
