HRIO
In 1966, the Horticultural Experiment Station (HES) was renamed the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario (HRIO). The Vineland Horticultural Experiment Station was one of several similar stations in the province, and the name change also brought a change in responsibilities. The new Institute integrated all horticultural research in the province funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food, including the Horticultural Experiment Station at Simcoe, as well as research projects and programs underway at Guelph, Ridgetown, and Kemptville. This change facilitated greater cooperation among growers, processors, and researchers and encouraged them to work collaboratively to address complex problems. This environment created opportunities for industry groups and government to develop jointly funded research projects involving growers, their Associations, and researchers from Vineland and beyond.

The Horticultural Products Laboratory began in earnest in Vineland in the late 1940s when the Ontario Department of Agriculture approved construction of a processing research facility. Construction began in 1947 and the lab was officially opened in the summer of 1950.
