Introduction
The Horticultural Experiment Station (HES) in Vineland was established in 1906 to develop and test plant varieties, in addition to providing farmers with virus-free stock. The Station's work focused mostly on fruits and included a grape program that was an important resource for the Niagara grape and wine industry. The scientists at the Experiment Station collaborated with local wineries and produce growers' associations to address industry problems and find innovative solutions. As the wine industry in Ontario evolved, the Station provided expertise and support as farmers and wineries experimented with growing European and hybrid wine grapes in Niagara. Their success enabled the Ontario wine industry to flourish.
