Formosa’s work focuses on the complicated nature of our many relationships. She explores the nuances and iterations of the term sonder as an inspiration to create a series of expressive, and layered line work with underlying messages of self-reflection and introspection. The term suggests having a heightened awareness that each passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as one’s own life. Formosa’s pieces come together through expressive, layered, and graphic line work, with varying depths of contrast, and there’s an energetic pulse that seems to charge the paper’s surface, inviting us to ponder the shared energies of our own personal connections. 

Unruly Growth 

Unruly Growth invites viewers to witness the very intricate, complicated, and delicate exploration of identity. For Choudhary, identity is multilayered and complex, as well as fluid. Through a multitude of painted works on canvas and wood, Choudhary investigates the interstices of identity; its formation, influences, intersections, and at times, disharmony. Together, the pieces are rich, vibrant, and meaningful in colour, drawing on the human form, personal objects, clothing, patterns, and language - all aspects representative of one or more of the artist’s explored identities. This work is deeply personal, yet a receptive space emerges that invites us to examine and reflect upon the vulnerability, muddiness, and struggle of what it might mean to be our self/selves.
