The VISA 3V91 course provided a critical examination of historical anatomical illustrations and models, and what these representations reveal culturally, societally and artistically. Using the trope of flap anatomy, whereby layers of the body are peeled open to reveal the organs and skeletal structure, students engaged in readings and discussions, as well as writing and studio projects. Through generous funding from the Experiential Education stream of CPI’s Teaching & Learning Innovations grants, students greatly benefitted from a field trip to the Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto to view anatomical illustrations from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, and took part in a presentation and discussion with Edmonton artist Marilène Oliver. This exhibition represents and highlights examples of the students’ creative responses to the course subject.
