On to Fort Erie
In 1939, the length of the highway from Toronto to Niagara Falls was completed. The Rainbow Bridge was built in 1941 and the Queen Elizabeth Way led the over the bridge to the United States. By 1942, one could drive straight from the Queen Elizabeth Way over the bridge. This was known as the Queen Elizabeth Way Extension or the Rainbow Bridge Approach. It is currently Highway 420. In 1941, the stretch of the Queen Elizabeth Way from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie was begun but it wouldn't be completed until after the war. It was in 1956 that the highway was actually paved right up to Fort Erie.
