So Many Catharine's

Catharine Derwin Lohrmann (1840-1863)

The tombsone of Catharine Lohrmann

Catharine Derwin was born ca. 1840 in Ballymacormack, County Longford, Ireland to Daniel and Elizabeth Derwin.   It is not known what year the Derwin's arrived in Canada, but by the 1861 Census Catharine, at the age of 17, is already married to Bartholomew Lohrmann and residing in Grantham Township.

Catharine and Bartholomew had one son together, Martin Lohrmann, born in Port Dalhousie on 23 July 1862 and baptized by the Roman Catholic Church in St. Catharines on 4 August 1862.

The baptism register lists Martin Lohrmann and his parents Catharine (Derwin) and Bartholomew Lohrmann.

An expanded view of the baptism registration of Martin Lohrmann, son of Catharine (Derwin) and Bartholomew Lohrmann of Port Dalhousie, Ont.

Sadly, by 10 October 1863 at the age of 23 years and 3 months, Catharine Derwin Lohrmann died.  Her tombstone can be found at the Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines, Ontario.

The 1871 Census of Canada finds a young Martin Lorman (sic) living in Port Dalhousie with his grandparents, Daniel and Elizabeth Derwin.  Bartholomew Lohrmann is absent from the 1871 Census.

Bartholomew Lourman (sic) appears in the 1870 US Census living in Union Township, Ringgold, Iowa with a new wife, Elizabeth.  By 1888, Bartholomew has made his way to Colorado and marries yet again to Louise Spurlock.  The last known siting of Bartholomew is his death notice in Argentina.
