Catharine Maria Hathaway (1817-1836)

The Hathaway family memorial at St. George's Anglican Church, St. Catharines, Ont. 

The death of Catharine Maria Hathaway is memorialized on the family tombstone. 

Catharine Maria Hathaway was born at Auburn, NY on the 8th August 1817, the daughter of Jonathan G. and Sarah Maria Esmond Hathaway. 

The tombstone of Catharine Hathaway in the St. George's Anglican Church cemetery indicates that she died in Cleveland, Ohio on 18 December 1836 and that her remains were deposited there.   

Catharine's mother died in 1842 and sometime after her father Jonathan G. Hathaway remarried to Jane, last name unknown.  They were living at the 10 Mile Creek [present day Homer] when Jane died in 1855.   Jonathan G. Hathaway died in St. Marys, Ontario on 3 December 1857.   It was remarked at his death that he had been an editor of a newspaper in the United States. 

The tombstone that memorializes Catharine Maria Hathaway also pays tribute to her brothers John Bemer Hathaway and Charles Henry Hathaway, her mother Sarah Maria Esmond Hathaway,  her father's second wife Jane, and their daughter Catharine Ann.   The tombstone also includes an inscription for her father J. G. Hathaway with his death date not inscribed.
