Welland Woodruff spent one hundred dollars for a month's lodging at the Welland House Hotel in 1886.
The Welland House was an elegant spa and hotel in its day. Spring water was pumped to the surface at the hotel. It was said the St. Catharines water had large amounts of Sodium, Calcium and Magnesium Chlorides. The mineral springs at the Welland House were thought to be very therapeutic. You could not use the health facilities at the hotel if you had: tuberculosis or any other infectious diseases, a drug addiction, epilespsy, or any form of insanity.
