Henry Carlisle - 40-42 St. Paul Street

This store specialized in hats, although they sold many other items. Here we have a receipt for a bonnet. A bird and a feather tuft completed the look.

Henry Carlisle was born in Whitby, Yorkshire, England in 1820. He was educated at a private school and worked for a short time as a tailor in England. He came to Canada in 1837 and spent some time in the Stamford, Ontario area.  He worked at Whan and McLean Dry Goods in Niagara.  In 1851, he opened a business with Robert Struthers. Mr. Carlisle moved into his own double store in 1866. He was elected Mayor in 1879 and was re-elected in 1880.

Here we have one of the Woodruff ladies who has opted for a bird motif on her hat.

In this artist's rendering of Isobel Price Woodruff - wife of Welland Woodruff, we see a hat with a feather tuft.
