Chatfield & Neelon - 11 & 13 St. Paul St.
Here we have a receipt from Chatfield and Neelon for mica smoke catchers, soft cotton hose, a four quart freezer, a lemon squeezer, a pink glass globe, and an etched globe. Work was done on the gas fixtures. Welland Woodruff was intent on improving DeVeaux Hall. He even envisioned a lily pond.
Sylvester Neelon was born in 1825 in New York State. He came to Port Dalhousie in 1832. He and his brother-in-law, James Norris established a shipping firm and built the Empire Flour Mill. He was also involved with establishing the Lincoln Flour Mill. He was incredibly industrious and went on to develop a cooperage to make his own barrels for shipping. He also had a stove manufacturing business. He owned a dry goods store and tavern and was involved in the building of the Niagara Central Railway. His accomplishments are numerous, yet he still found time to be a member of the Town Council and and he represented Lincoln in the Provincial Legislature in 1875 and in 1879-1886. He had a construction company which won the contract to do the masonry at Toronto City Hall in 1889.
