The Falls View Bridge Collapse

On January 23, 1938, a wind storm caused ice to flow down the river and over the Falls. There had been a January thaw as well which resulted in record high levels of ice and water.  The abutments of the bridge were covered in ice and it was anticipated that the bridge would fall. All traffic was halted the day before the collapse. The Falls View Bridge, also known as the Honeymoon Bridge, collapsed at 4:20 p.m. on January 27, 1938.

Due to the precautions which were taken, no lives were lost when the bridge tumbled into the icy gorge.

The bridge roared as it gave way to the ice and the river. If you look carefully, you can see the General Brock Hotel sign illuminated in the background.
