Press Article Planning + Masked Truths - Early Notes
Transcription of a page from one of AMM's notebooks. The notes on the page are miscellaneous and do not all correspond with the same scene or moment. A plot point circled around on this page is the newspaper article that is printed on the events surrounding Claire's death, the children's statements, and Rick's and Henry's alibi. AMM planned for the paper to both dismiss the notion of war criminals in Canada being a dangerous or foreign ordeal, and also to incorrectly conclude that the war criminal was in the car with the alleged air force man that waved at Rick and that it was a sadist from a munitions factory who was preying upon children in Centralia. Transcription: () - best guess at a word or phrase <> - scratched out on the page [] - indecipherable - Proud of never having been in SS - he was a CIVILIAN - Von Braun was not + yet he (goes) to America - Does a piece appear in L. Free Press? War criminals under every bush Bygones be bygones War is over + the only people in CANADA have been cleared. - Fr. understandably concerned (further) + a Jew - who may have suffered terribly → judgment. - Paper gets facts wrong: war criminal in car with air force man. - A sadist from a munitions factory on the loose, preying upon children - A thinks it’s good that Marjorie’s statement is less incriminating than Grace’s - A thinks Colleen is not married -
Fried's True Emotions + Madeleine's Guilt - Early Notes
Transcription of a page in AMM's notebook. This is a miscellaneous page and not all sentences directly correlate with the same chapter or plot point. This page explores Madeleine's guilt of the lie she told and for never telling anyone about Mr. March's assaults, since she now sees sickeningly clearly that he killed Claire. It also demands more character background from Fried, as MacDonald begins to form his motives for defecting and his true opinions and feelings toward the others at Dora, specifically how he is perceived in comparison to people like Von Braun. Transcription: () - my best guess of what the phrase / word is <> - crossed out on the page [] - indecipherable Her guilt about lie will begin the [indecipherable] she tells her father what she said + he says good always tell the truth. People see (Mengle pitching dryer beet) in Oxford County. Unsubstantiated. Mad. reads transcripts and feels guilty for not having told about Mr. March because it is sickeningly clear to her that he did it. Need moment of Mr. March after Rick is arrested or convicted - his fear, relief - he knows he is implicated, terrified of being accused. When it turns out he had alibi, Mad. gives up on finding out. Need more from FRIED on what he has been doing in S. Union - why he wanted to <to> defect - his Von Braun resentment + hero worship - his resentment of being seen as a killer when the others are heroes. -
Froelich's Attempts to Reveal Fried + Jack's Involvement - Early Notes
Transcription of a page in one of AMM's notebooks. It is a miscellaneous note, with the ideas not directly correlating to the same chapter or moment, though Fried, Froelich, and Jack are mentioned a couple separate times. In this page, she lays out why Jack shouldn't worry about Froelich potentially exposing Fried and brainstorms ways Jack might work to protect Fried's identity as well. Transcription: - The “running man”, behind [indecipherable] convey plot message ie. CAR - Simon points that out regretfully in phone call - A - does not need story of [indecipherable] being shot - HANGINGS are it. - <put> move Peenemunde from N. Falls to phone conversation? Need it before N. Falls - Jack does not need to obsess about Fr + [indecipherable] - maybe Fr. has put up flyers - gone to press but… they won’t print it in Ex or London - Karen gets worried about his obsession? - Does Jack suggest Fro. put up flyers? - does he then take them down? - Why is Fried worried about being [indecipherable] in a country which is haven for war criminals? - EICHMANN? - Germany wants to prosecute at [indecipherable] CJC + [indecipherable] Froelich? -

Spitfire: TWTCF manuscript + notes
Cover for AMM's 2002 manuscript (excluding final section) of The Way The Crow Flies, previously named Spitfire (related to Madeleine's description via her father). There are scrawled notes on the side, some of which I can make out. These include: "NB. Phonecall with Simon [...] labour at camps/dora" "froelich knew about Oskar [from the...]" "pg. 558-62 Jack and [simon] ... (I can't figure out most of this)" "Simon should introduce "[...]" race not Jack. Jack should only worry..." "Madeleine + Froelich [...]?" -

AMM Drawing: Hitler and man (possibly Goebbels)
Hand drawing of Hitler and what I am assuming is some sort of advisor. AMM mentioned in our meeting that the picture is Hitler, but I don't think he mentioned who the second man is. Included is an image that is somewhat similar to the drawing but not an exact match. The man, if the photo provided is a match, would be Joseph Goebbels, a Nazi politician, chief propagandist for the Nazi Party, and former Chancellor of the German Reich (from Wikipedia) -

"Secret Agenda" Page Clippings
Pages 25, 26 and 27 (seemingly in full) and 3 un-numbered clippings of various pages of "Secret Agenda", from what seems to be a chapter called "Rules of the Game". One clipping has "68" written next to it, most-likely the page number, with a rewritten quote from the page written underneath it. I was unable to find the author of the book. I got results for "Secret Agenda: Watergate, Deepthroat, and the CIA" by Jim Hougan, but I am not sure if that is a match with this. -
