Small Homes

Small Homes presents selected small-format paintings showing objects to be found at artists’ homes, for example armchairs, home plants, beds, bathtubs, porches. This project is inspired by Shawn Serfas’ engagement with his students in Visual Arts, Brock University.

My name is Maya Meyerman and I am a fourth-year student at Brock University in the Studies in Arts and Culture program with a concentration in Cultural Management. Prior to working on Small Homes I worked in arts administration at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Rodman Hall Art Centre and the Juvenis Festival with Blue Canoe Productions. I have also worked as a research assistant for the Industrial Niagara exhibition at Rodman Hall in Spring 2020 and have had written works published in the ti< publication. I would like to thank the Office of the Vice President, Research from Brock University for their generous funding through the Research Training Award grant as well as Catherine Parayre for her continuous support as my mentor.

Outreach Activities: Your Turn to Create!

#1
Small Homes
shows images of artists’ homes. Join these artists by watching this video on how to make a zine, and create a tiny self-published work including texts and/or images on the notion of home. Once you are finished, feel free to send us a photo of your favourite page and we’ll be happy to post it.

This workshop is part of the 2020-2021 Walker Cultural Leader series in the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture at the Marilyn I. School of Fine and Performing Arts.

This zine-making workshop is based on the Small Homes exhibition; it will allow participant to create their own zine. This is a fun way to learn more about the pieces in the exhibition and explore your own home in a creative way.

Once completed, participants are invited to submit photos of their zines to stactube@gmail.com to be shared on the Interiors project website.

TO SHARE YOUR CONTRIBUTION WITH US, click on Outreach Activities on the main site of the Interiors platform and send us your file in Word (for text) or JPEG (for images). (Please do not send videos or audio recordings.)

Provide your name and your email address. If you wish to use a fictive name, don’t forget to include it. Your email address will not be made public; we will use it only if we need to be in touch with you.

The curatorial team reserves the right to edit or not publish inadequate submissions.

Small Homes is based on people’s houses. For this activity, you will use Roomstyler (roomstyler.com) to design a room using the features on the website. On this platform, you will be able to take photos of the 3D rendering of your design. Once you have downloaded these photos, you can share them on a padlet titled “My Small Homes,” which you can access using this link: https://padlet.com/mm16lt/4p5gkidrf8h tq3e0. Though you will need to create an account on Roomstyler, this activity can be completed free of charge.

Please note that this activity cannot be submitted to Interiors.
