William James Butler was a minister in the AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church.  He is widely credited for establishing the AME church at Bronte-Oakville.

William James Butler married Mary Isabella Moore at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Toronto on 16 December 1856.  

Twenty-fifth wedding anniversary invitation

William J. and Mary Isabella Butler celebrated their silver wedding anniversary with a party held on 20 July 1885.

Including Eliza Grace Butler Adams, William and Mary Isabella Butler had ten children, five of whom lived to adulthood.   Family connections have been lost in the intervening years, but three photographs in the Adams family collection include possible brothers of Eliza Grace Butler Adams.
