Faces of Freedom
The following photographs have all been produced using the Ambrotype method which was invented in the years preceding the beginning of the civil war in 1856. The images had been in the possession of Iris Bell Sloman whose ancestors had sought freedom in Canada. The dates around which these photos were taken are suggestive of the fact that most if not all of the people featured would have been Runaways on the verge of beginning a new life in the north.
