Description

Question 1: What is your earliest memory of the COVID-19 virus arriving in the Niagara area? How did you initially feel? How do you feel now?
I heard about the virus in late January at a business conference. I soon realized that due to everyday travel that it wouldn't be long before it was here. Fear did not kick in until school were closed and life as we knew if has forever changed. I was afraid because I was 5 months pregnant. With such little knowledge of the virus I was concerned for myself, my family and my baby.

Question 2: How long did you expect the pandemic to last in those early months? What are your thoughts now?
I knew it was going to be much longer then two weeks that's forsure. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes 5 years or more before we get our freedoms back.

Question 3: Twelve months in, what have been the most challenging aspects of the pandemic? What could have been done better?
Isolation. Media fear mongering. Government controls without logic. Scared elder family members.

Our government should have taken better care of long term care, PPE Supplies and health care staff.

Question 4: Silver linings - What positive experiences had you had that may not have happened without the time at home due to the pandemic - new hobbies, home renovations, new relationships, etc.?
The positive is family.

Question 5: Have you had direct experience with COVID-19 either as a patient or a caregiver? Describe the experience while honouring confidentiality.
I had my baby in July. No visitors. Couldn't leave the room. Masks on any time someone was in our room or anywhere in the hospital. Very prison feeling. My care from my OBGYN was very much the same as my first child pre-Covid. However aftercare for my new baby has been completely different. Haven't seen our family Doctor since my baby has been born, always a different resident Doctor. Appointments are far and few between. I am grateful to not be a first time mother during all of this.
Very little support for mothers. Zoom is not really a connection. It takes a village to raise a child and right now most mothers don't have their village support.

Question 6: Vaccination programs have begun. Will you get vaccinated at the earliest opportunity? Why or why not?
I will wait to be vaccinated. Only because I would like to see our older population get a shot ahead of me.

Question 7: What are your biggest concerns for the upcoming year?
Freedoms. I fear our government has taken far too much away from people and businesses. They took it away fast and I don't believe they will give it back nearly as fast.

Question 8: What are you most excited to do when the pandemic is formally over?
I want to take my child to a concert. I want to have a large family gathering and I want to go on an overnight date with my partner, no kids.
