The Evil of Music Lessons
Harold Bradley was a prolific writer. The Bradley Institute Fonds is filled with words of wisdom from Bradley. One of the more interesting, albeit controversial pieces is this one. Bradley cautions that most parents do not want their children to be musicians. Parents generally have a vague idea of why they want their children to take music lessons. He claims that music is "fundamentally a masculine art." He also points out that most music teachers are women who teach in a cozy, home-like atmosphere. The teachers say that the students are talented, but most music students "haven't got a hope of ever becoming a professional yet they will spend four years of college and thousands of dollars to find out there is no place for them in professional music."
