Bradt Family Hair Scrapbook

A hobby that spanned generations.

These are two pages from a scrapbook containing locks of hair of Bradt family members. The album was started by Elizabeth Bradt (nee Hansler) in 1843 and continued by her daughter, Mercy J. Dunn, in 1899.

Each lock of hair contains the person’s name, the year the lock was clipped, and sometimes other details such as date of birth and death, place of birth, or other biographical information. Each lock is adorned with ribbons and flowers, and many samples are braided.

There are 255 locks of hair in the album and it was updated all the way into the 1970s.

This album can be found in the Bradt Family Collection in the Brock University Archives.
