An Example of Cross-Hatching or Cross-Writing

In this 1835 letter to Alexander Hamilton from A. Williams, Mr. Williams has employed cross-hatching or cross-writing. This was used in the 19th Century in the early days of the postal system to save paper and to save on postal charges. The cross-hatching  was difficult, and sometimes impossible to read.
